Ever a friend of the arts, Paul&Shark has taken upon itself to restore the signs on the gondola and "traghetti" piers or "stazi", as part of its ongoing cultural work to protect the history and tradition of this fascinating symbol of Venetian culture.
This initiative, which is being carried out in collaboration with the Ente Gondola governing body and the Comune di Venezia, aims to safeguard the identifying markers on the gondola boarding and mooring docks, which to this day are still used by both tourists and residents alike. Gondolas, which have always been a symbol of the Republic of Venice, feature heavily in the works of some of the greatest poets, from Goethe to Chateaubriand.
With their unmistakable and slightly asymmetric shape, they can be seen criss-crossing the Venetian canals, transporting passengers and visitors back in time to discover the city's historic and undying charm. "My gondola," wrote Marcel Proust, "followed the course of the small canals; like the mysterious hand of a Genie leading me through the maze of this oriental city."
